Well, there wasn’t exactly consensus on what to do about poor Nova the PowerBook, but when a couple of suggested quick fixes didn’t do the trick (thanks, Kevin!), I hauled Nova into the shop today. So for the weekend at least, the good old serviceable Silver Surfer is rising to the occasion. I can get to the blog and the webmail and the LJ, so all is more or less groovy.
Except what this is gonna cost me, but oh well. Life in the techie lane.
I had a fantastic day at work, though—went out to one of MPOW’s other campuses, elevator-pitched the repository to a receptive faculty meeting, and spent the rest of the day finding out about all kinds of pies I can get my fingers into. Highly, highly productive. The best part is that for the first time, I genuinely felt that there were obvious needs that the repository can and should fill—none of the pie-in-the-sky stuff (much though I love it) about fixing the serials crisis and changing the world.
I also got to talk to a trio of library-school students about what I do and what the academic-library landscape is like. (No, I didn’t scare them about the job market; it’s too late for that. Besides, they’re sharp and they’re picking up library experience. They’ll be okay.) I honestly felt a little sheepish and silly on the “professional” side of the table, but I was up-front with them about that. I enjoyed talking to them, and I think they liked me too.
You know those days when you walk out of work and the sky is bright blue and it’s pleasant out and you’ve had a fabulous day and it is an absolutely perfect thing that you do whatever it is you do? I just had one of those days. It feels damn good to be a librarian.
