I have a new title. Innkeeper of the Roach Motel.
I often get asked whether it is possible to do versioning in the institutional repository I run. The answer is “not very well.” To get the idea across, I explain that DSpace is like a roach motel: files get in, but they don’t get out. (Unless you’re System $DEITY, yes, I know.) It’s funny, it’s reasonably apt, it gets the idea across.
My coworkers are impish about odd metaphors, which is how I acquired my new title. It’s a step up from “Text Wrangler.” I think.
Honestly, if we’re going to be all buggy about metaphors—I’m a pillbug, trying to shove a big old pile uphill. After almost eight months of trying, I’m just about getting that sucker moving. In another eight months, I may even stop complaining about how hard it is to attract material… naaaaaaah.
