Slavering for a look at the Roach Motel article? (No, I didn’t think so.) This article covers a lot of the ground I was planning to with regard to faculty attitudes toward data-archiving and institutional repositories.
(Don’t worry; I’ve still got a lot to say. This just means I get to quote somebody else on the aforementioned topics instead of going ballistic myself.)
The mentioned “self-sufficiency” can get outright pathological. I have heard tell (she said vaguely) of a very expensive project one of whose products is a short ton of photographs. The photographs languish (and have for years) without so much as a lick of metadata, and the PIs have hired a string of hapless grad students in the discipline with minor amounts of programming expertise (and no knowledge of data management) to set up the magic-pixie-dust tool that will magically organize them, make them searchable, and otherwise fix the problem.
Because it’s disciplinary expertise that counts, don’t you know.
Sigh.
